How to Break in a Composite Bat

Breaking in a composite bat the right way improves performance, extends bat life, and helps you hit with a bigger sweet spot. Unlike one-piece aluminum bats, composite bats need a short break-in period so the composite layers settle and you can maximize the "trampoline effect." Our Baseball Experts share a recommended break-in process so you can properly prepare your composite bat for the season.

Understanding Composite Bats

Composite bats are made from layered materials including carbon fiber, fiberglass, and other resins, offering a softer feel, reduced vibration, and a larger sweet spot. Most composite bats out of the wrapper feature fibers that are tightly wound and need to be broken-in to help them open up for peak power.

Tips for Breaking in Your Composite Bat

Breaking in a new composite bat typically takes between 150 and 200 swings. Whether you're breaking in a softball or baseball composite bat, follow these tips to make sure your it is game-ready:

Tip #1: Inspect Your New Bat

Before you start, check your bat for any visible defects or damage. Make sure it’s in perfect condition before beginning the break-in process.

Tip #2: Gradually Increase Effort

Start at 50% power and hit about 25 balls. After each round, gradually increase your swing intensity until you reach 100% effort—ideally within the first 100 swings.

Tip #3: Hit off the Tee of Soft Tosses

Begin by hitting off a tee or using soft toss instead of a pitching machine.

Tip #4: Use a Game Ball

Always use a regulation game ball rather than a practice or dimpled training ball. This helps prevent damage to the bat and more accurately simulates real game conditions.

Tip #5: Rotate the Bat

After every swing, rotate the bat about ¼ inch to ensure the barrel breaks in evenly. This promotes consistent performance and extends the bat’s lifespan.

A broken-in bat will make a distinct ping or "pop" when hitting the ball and you'll notice that the ball will come off the bat faster and with more distance.
