Tips for Setting up Duck Decoy Spreads

Successful waterfowl hunting depends on strategic duck decoying. An effective spread is more than just placing decoys; it's about having a clear plan for your layout to confidently draw in birds close. Our SCHEELS Experts, Isaiah and Jordan, share some proven tactics for optimizing your basic duck decoy spreads so you can elevate your hunt.

Choose the Right Decoys

To create the most effective, realistic decoy spread, using a variety of decoys is important. Our Experts share the following tips to help you get started.

Maximize Visibility with White Accents

On bright, sunny days, enhance your spread's visibility by incorporating decoys with prominent white features. Adding as much white as possible helps your decoys stand out under bright sunlight. Canada Goose feeder decoys are effective for this, as their entire back half is white.

Create a Realistic Feeding Zone

Blend field decoys with your floaters to naturally extend your spread to the pond edges. This approach helps pack the edges of the pond you're hunting, simulating a larger, inviting feeding area for incoming birds. Always ensure you leave a clear, large opening in the middle of the spread to create a landing spot for waterfowl.

Incorporate Movement

Dynamic movement is crucial for a lifelike spread. Motion decoys add essential animation, providing a little movement to the spread. This is especially important when hunting small ponds, helping to attract and reassure wary birds.

Be Strategic in Your Number of Decoys

How many decoys you should use is dependent on several factors, including the type of water (i.e., pond, lake, river), whether the spread is temporary or being left out for the season, how you plan to transport the decoys (backpack or boat), and personal preference. For more confined, small bodies of water, anywhere from six to a few dozen can be sufficient. In larger bodies of water, this number can be up to the hundreds. We recommend experimenting with different spread sizes and adapting as you get further into the season.

As a general rule, avoid using too many decoys, especially in smaller bodies of water. A well-placed, modest spread appears more natural and can be more effective than an overly large spread—less is more in confined waters.

Expert Tip: The same advice applies to using calls; the smaller the body of water and spread, the fewer calls you'll need to create a convincing display.

Other Tips for the Perfect Setup

In addition to your decoy choice and layout, our Experts stress the importance of optimizing your setup for easy transport and retrieval of decoys.

Invest in a Quality Pack

Light, efficient gear transport is essential for accessing prime hunting locations on a walk-in hunt. Pack your decoys in durable bags and utilize a comfortable backpack for light and easy mobility. This allows you to focus on the hunt, not the haul.

Hunt with a Partner

A hunting partner equipped with waders or a skilled retriever dog is invaluable. This ensures efficient recovery of downed birds and decoys, preventing loss and maintaining your momentum. This is an often-overlooked yet important piece of a successful hunt.

By using these effective decoy tactics, you can significantly improve your waterfowl hunting success. Strategic placement, realistic movement, and the right gear are key to drawing in more birds.
