Types of Towable Tubes: How to Choose
As the weather gets warmer and everyone wants to be on the water, finding the right water sports gear is essential for a fun summer. Our Experts explain the types of towable tubes and how to choose the best one for memorable adventures.
Why Towable Tubes?
Tubing is a fun way to enjoy the water and warm temperatures. Whether you're with a group of people or are tubing solo, this activity requires little skill and is fun for any age. Unlike other water sports, tubing can be done with nearly any type of boat.
Number of Riders
Before choosing your tube, knowing how many riders you will want the tube to hold and the maximum capacity is important. Tubes are generally based on weight, instead of quantity.
1-2 Person Tubes
These tubes are commonly donut-style and are smaller in size. Whether you want to ride sitting down or on your stomach, handles are located around the outside for safety.

Finding the Right Rope
Ropes must not only be at least 50 feet long, but they should not exceed 65 feet for safety. You must use a tow rope that is specifically designed for towing tubes, as they are made of durable materials and a high breaking strength.
The lowest rope strength should be around 2,000 pounds, while the highest should be around 6,000.
| Riders | Max Weight | Rope Strength |
|---|---|---|
1 | 170 lbs. | 1,500 lbs. |
2 | 340 lbs. | 2,375 lbs. |
3 | 510 lbs. | 3,350 lbs. |
4 | 680 lbs. | 4,100 lbs. |
5-6 | 850-1020 lbs. | 6,100 lbs. |
Expert Tip | Choosing a rope with a booster ball reduces splash and drag while absorbing shock.
Types of Tubes
Donut Tubes
This classic style is typically the most recognizable tube design. With a hollowed center, riders will sit or lay on the middle. These tubes are versatile and perfect for riders who are just starting out.
Deck Tubes
These tubes are flat and built for multiple riders to lie on their stomachs and require a strong grip to stay on. This style is also great for lounging in the water after an exhilarating day behind the boat.
Ride-In Tubes
Ride-in or cockpit tubes feature a ‘sofa-style’ design and are ideal for a more relaxed cruise. While you can still kick it into gear for a thrilling ride, this style of tube doesn't require as strong a grip to hold on.
Banana & Unique Tubes
For riders looking for an extra challenge, banana and unique styled tubes will be a good choice. Usually designed for more advanced riders, these tubes feature a variety of fun shapes and concepts.
