While Detroit-style pizzas were originally made in rectangular pans designed to hold automotive parts–this recipe is done in a pan every home should have–the classic 12’’ cast iron. Characterized by its deliciously thick crust and caramelized mozzarella cheese crown, this pizza will fill your stomach after a hard day’s work on the General Motors factory line.
Ingredients
- 1 package of Urban Slicer’s Epic Deep Dish Pizza Dough mix
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 cups whole milk mozzarella cheese
- 1 tbsp Urban Slicer’s Red Pizza Mojo seasoning
- 1 tbsp Urban Slicers White Pizza Mojo seasoning
- Pepperoni slices
- ½ of one hot Italian sausage link
- Ricotta cheese
- Basil
- Shaved parmesan cheese
- ½ can of Urban Slicer pizza sauce
Tools
- Cast Iron Pan
- Dough Mixer
- Plastic wrap
- Kamado Joe
- Pizza cutter
Instructions
- Prepare Dough: Pour the dough into a mixer on slow. Then, slowly add one cup of 80℉ water. Mix for 8-10 minutes until the dough is tacky. While the dough is mixing, prepare a cast iron pan with olive oil or butter to prevent the dough from sticking.
- Press Dough into Cast Iron Pan: Once done mixing, place the dough into the cast iron pan and slowly stretch the dough to the edges. Once stretched, spread some olive oil on top of the dough to prevent it from drying out while rising. Then, cover the pan with plastic wrap and let the dough rise for 2-4 hours.
- Partially Bake: After the dough has risen for 2-4 hours, partially bake the dough in the oven for 5-7 minutes at 500℉, until the crust firms up, starts to pull away from the edges, and is starting to very lightly brown
- Add Toppings: Top the dough with whole milk shredded mozzarella (focusing on the outer edges), pepperoni, dime-sized dollops of sausage, Urban Slicer White Pizza Mojo, Urban Slicer Red Pizza Mojo.
- Continue Baking: Let the pizza bake for 10-15 minutes until the toppings look cooked and the outside cheese looks caramelized and crispy. Then, let the pizza cool for 10 minutes before removing it from the pan.
- Slice & Add More Toppings: Top with freshly shaved parmesan cheese, ricotta dollops, basil, and warm Urban Slicer Pizza Sauce
